The Brazilian Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry (BrazMedChem) is an international scientific event, which main objective it to bring together Brazilian Medicinal Chemists and students to discuss state-of-the-art discovery/development tools and strategies. One of BrazMedChem many benefits is to provide a friendly atmosphere that stimulates the cooperation between scientists from Brazil and abroad. The exchange of experiences and information among researchers is essential to meet the challenges of the medicinal chemistry of the twenty-first century and the many challenges it poses to public health.
2022
To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the 10th edition of BrazMedChem was planned to take place in the same State as the BrazMedChem- 2001 in 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic made this goal impossible. The event was held in Poços de Caldas-MG on October 2022 and for the first time, simultaneous plenary lectures took place in order to accommodate the large number of speakers.
2018
The 9th edition of BrazMedChem was supposed to take place in 2018, but due to critical politic and economic moment Brazil was going through the members of the medicinal chemistry division of SBQ decided to postpone it to 2019. The 9thedition was held in Pirenopolis – GO, under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Carolina Horta Andrade. For the first time, the event focused on “Bridging the gap between Academia and Pharmaceutical Industries for Advancing Drug Discovery”. Then, in addition to several world-class scientists, such as Dr. Gunda I. Georg and Dr. José L. Medina Franco, several CEO of Brazilian pharmaceutic industries attended the meeting.
2016
In its “sweet-sixteen“, BrazMedChem became an official event of the medicinal chemistry division of Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ) and its organization was passed from the previously established group of consultants to a rotating committee appointed during the annual meeting of SBQ. Thus, the chair of BrazMedChem – 2016, Prof. Eliezer J. Barreiro, had been chosen two years before, during the 37th Annual Meeting of SBQ in 2014. The BrazMedChem2016 was held in Armação dos Búzios -RJ.
2014
In 2014, BrazMedChem was held in Campos do Jordão-SP. This meeting was organized by Prof. Dr. Andrei Leitão, awarded the Young researcher prize in 2010, and it set a new record for the meeting: the highest number of invited speakers among all events. Among them, It is worth of mentioning that Prof. Dr. Kurt Wüthrich (2002 Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry) gave the opening conference and made a significant contribution to identify “the turning point in Medicinal Chemistry” required to face the drug development hurdles and challenges
2012
Aiming at reaching all Brazilian medicinal chemists, The BrazMedChem 2012 was held in Canela – RS, located in the South region of Brazil, with Prof. Dr. Vera Lucia Eifler Lima as chair. This event was another successful case in which a huge number of researchers of this region attended the meeting to discuss XX Century Diseases & XXI Century Drug Design Strategies”.
2010
In 2010, the BrazMedChem event celebrated its 10th anniversary, with Dr. Carlos A. Montanari serving as chair once again. The hills of Ouro Preto-MG were witness to several innovative additions to the scientific program, including the first-ever joint workshop between DNDi and BrazMedChem focused on lead optimization.
2010
In 2008, BrazMedChem was organized for the first time outside Brazil southeast region. The success of this event, held at Porto de Galinhas-PE, in envisioning contemporary applications of medicinal chemistry as a multidisciplinary science resulted in the highest number of BrazMedChem participants up to that moment. Prof. Dr. Ivan da Rocha Pitta, one of the first medicinal chemists from the northeastern region was the chair of this event and among the massive number of foreign researchers, Dr. Michael H. Gelb made quite an impression on the audience.

2006
In 2006, the third edition BrazMedChem was held in Aguas de Sao Pedro-SP, under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Glaucius Oliva. This successful event had Dr. Karl Barry Sharpless (two times Nobel prize awardee) was one of the key speakers, not to mention several other renowned international researchers as invited speakers.
2004
The second BrazMedChem was held in Rio de Janeiro-RJ, in 2004, with Prof. Dr. Jose Daniel Figueroa Villar as the chair of the event. During this meeting, a set of outstanding medicinal chemists discussed new trends in Drug Discovery and development. From an organization point of view, BrazMedChem organizing committee decided to invite a group of consultants dedicated to improve and expand medicinal chemistry in Brazil.
2001
Since its first edition in 2001, which as held in Caxambu-MG, under the coordination of Profs. Drs. Carlos Montanari, Ricardo Bicca de Alencastro and Antonia Tavares do Amaral, BrazMedChem strived to gather information that would lead to new approaches in Drug Design.
